Bowditch, Charles P(ickering) (1842-1921)

US businessman and archaeologist. A Harvard graduate, he was president of Pepperell Manufacturing Company and Massachusetts Hospital Life Insurance Company while pursuing a career as an amateur archaeologist. After 1891 he planned and financed annual Peabody Museum expeditions to Central America. He wrote a groundbreaking study of Maya hieroglyphics in 1910.
