Bowie

Town in west-central Maryland, 24 km/15 mi northeast of Washington DC; population (1990) 37,600. It is largely residential. Bowie State College, founded here in 1865, was originally a black institution. Bowie Race Track (established in 1914) was formerly a leading regional horse racing track.
