cardiomyopathy

Chronic disorder of the heart muscle. It may be inherited or it may arise from a range of conditions, including viral infection, muscular dystrophy and alcoholism. It may cause enlargement of the heart as well as heart failure and cardiac arrhythmia, both of which can be treated. Some patients may be suitable for a heart transplant.
