Boxford

Town in Essex County, northeastern Massachusetts, 32 km/20 mi northeast of Boston; population (1998 est) 9,000. It is a wooded and traditionally agricultural community, now becoming an outer Boston suburb. Its rural appearance is fostered by a long-standing regulation that ensures houses are built on two-acre (0.8-ha) plots. Tourists are attracted by hiking trails and bridle paths, as well as Boxford's eight entries on the national register of historic places, which include houses, historic districts, and a school.
