Bozeman

City and administrative headquarters of Gallatin County, southwest Montana, 113 km/70 mi southeast of Butte; population (2000) 27,500. It is a trade and manufacturing centre for wheat, livestock, and lumber. Montana State University (1893) is a mainstay of its economy and cultural life.

The city was founded in 1864 and named after John Bozeman, who guided the first settlers to the Gallatin Valley. There is a US Fish Technology Center to the east and an Agricultural Research Center to the northwest. Bozeman Hot Springs are to the southwest.
