Bréville, Pierre de

Bréville, Pierre (Onfroy) de (1861–1949)

French composer. He was intended for the diplomatic service, but was allowed to study with Dubois at the Paris Conservatory. He decided to devote himself to composition and became a pupil of Franck. Later he became a professor at the Schola Cantorum, a music critic, and a member of the committee of the Société Nationale de Musique.

Works

opera Eros vainqueur (1905); incidental music for Maeterlinck's Sept Princesses and overture for his La Princesse Maleine; Mass and motets; La Cloche fêlée (after Baudelaire) for orchestra; two violin and piano sonatas.
