Bradenton

City in Manatee County, southwest Florida, on the southern shores of Tampa Bay, 61 km/38 mi southwest of of Tampa; population (1990) 43,800. Bradenton is a resort centre during the winter months; its agricultural activities include fruit growing and cattle farming. It has shipping facilities for local citrus fruits and vegetables. Some travertine, a sparkling sheet of calcium carbonate formed on cave walls and floors, is quarried here.

The Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto landed nearby in 1539, but the first permanent settlement dates from 1854; the town was incorporated in 1903.
