Bradley, Bill (1943- )

US basketball player and politician. A three-time All-American forward at Princeton University 1961-65, Bradley was part of the US basketball team that won the Olympic gold medal in Tokyo in 1964, and joined the National Basketball Association New York Knicks in 1967. He was elected to the US Senate in 1978, where he gained recognition as an expert in energy conservation and an advocate for civil rights. He served three terms in the Senate, and retired in 1995. In 2000 he ran for the Democratic presidential nomination against Vice-President Al Gore. He was elected to basketball's Hall of Fame in 1983.

Born in Missouri, Bradley studied at Princeton University, New Jersey, and at the University of Oxford, England, on a Rhodes scholarship. While playing for the New York Knicks he wrote an account of his experiences, Life on the Run, in 1976. In 1977 he retired from basketball and achieved the position of senator for New Jersey, and was re-elected in 1984 and 1990. After he retired from the Senate he wrote Time Present, Time Past (1996) and Values of the Game (1998).
