Bradshaw, John (1602–1659)

English judge who pronounced the death sentence on King Charles I. In the Civil War, when the king was brought to trial 1649, Bradshaw was president of the court. He put aside all legal objections to the court, refused to allow Charles to speak in his own defence, and condemned him to death. After the king's execution, Bradshaw became one of the prominent leaders of the Commonwealth.

Bradshaw was born in Cheshire, qualified as a barrister 1627, and took part in a number of important trials during the period 1640–47. He branded as illegal Oliver Cromwell's dissolution of the Rump Parliament, was an opponent of Cromwell during the Commonwealth period, and was forced into retirement.

Bradshaw, John (1933– )

US counsellor, lecturer, and author. Bradshaw became well-known in 1986 through the Public Broadcasting System series Bradshaw On – The Family and the book of the same title. His concept of reparenting one's ‘inner child’ traumatized by dysfunctional family relationships won him a wide following.
