Brǎila

Port in Romania on the River Danube; 170 km/106 mi from its mouth; population (2002) 216,300. It is a naval base. Industries include the manufacture of artificial fibres, iron and steel, machinery, and paper. It was controlled by the Ottoman Empire from 1544 to 1828.
