Brainerd

City and administrative headquarters of Crow Wing County, central Minnesota, on the Mississippi River, 89 km/55 mi north of St Cloud; population (2000) 13,200. Industries include paper, sportswear, railway workshops, and dairy products. It is the seat of Brainerd Community College (1938). The city is at the heart of the region associated with tales of the legendary lumberjack Paul Bunyan.

It was originally a lumber camp created by the Northern Pacific Railroad in 1871. The Paul Bunyan Center is a lumbering museum, and Lumbertown USA, a replica of an early logging camp, is to the northwest.

Brainerd is a gateway to such recreational areas as Pillsbury and Crow Wing state forests and Mille Lacs Lake, and the Cuyuna Iron Range. Camp Ripley Military Reservation is to the southwest.
