Braithwaite, John (1797–1870)

English engineer. He constructed the first practical steam fire engine, and with the US engineer John Ericsson built the locomotive engine Novelty for George and Robert Stephenson, the first to run a mile a minute (96 km/60 mi per hour), in 1829. He and Ericsson also fitted a canal boat with a screw propeller, allowing it to go from London to Manchester and back on canals and the River Thames. With the Irish civil engineer Charles Vignoles (1793–1875), Braithwaite projected and laid out the Eastern Counties Railway 1836–43.
