Brampton

City and administrative headquarters of Peel Regional Municipality, southern Ontario, Canada, on Etobicoke Creek, 32 km/20 mi west of Toronto; population (1991) 234,400. It developed as a flower-growing centre in the 1860s and nurseries remain important. Other industries include tanning and the manufacture of optical instruments, communications equipment, cars (there is a Chrysler plant), furniture, paper, knitted goods, soap, and shoes.

Brampton was settled in 1830. Situated in a dairying and livestock raising area, the city is now an expanding industrial and residential suburb.
