Brandenburg

Town in Germany, on the River Havel; 60 km/36 mi west of Berlin; population (1995) 87,000. Industries include textiles, engineering, and telecommunications. It has a 12th-century Romanesque cathedral, with Gothic (15th-century) modifications. There is also a Gothic town hall with a 5-m/16-ft high statue of Roland (1474), nephew of Charlemagne, as a symbol of municipal authority. The old town contains interesting 18th-century buildings and parts of the town walls survive.
