Brandon

Town in Manitoba, Canada, situated on the Assiniboine River, approximately 211 km/131 mi west of Winnipeg; population (1991) 38,600. The town is in one of the most richly cultivated parts of the province, wheat being the chief crop. It is an important centre for research and development in agricultural techniques and agricultural genetics. The city's industries include oil refining and meat, poultry, and dairy processing. Chemicals, pharmaceuticals, fertilizers, agricultural machinery, textiles, boats, and furniture are manufactured here. It is Manitoba's second-largest town and a booming tourist centre. The city is home to Brandon University (1899) and Assiniboine Community College.

Founded in the early 1880s by the Canadian Pacific Railway, it was named after Brandon House, an early Hudson's Bay Company post situated nearby. as well, and three major annual provincial fairs are held.
