Branford

Town in south-central Connecticut, on Long Island Sound, 10 km/6 mi southeast of New Haven; population (1990) 27,600. It is a growing residential suburb that also manufactures iron fittings, vehicle parts, and other products.

Settled in 1644 by planters from Wethersfield, it was long a fishing, oystering, and shipping centre. The town includes the coastal resort communities of Indian Neck, Pine Orchard, Stony Creek, and Short Beach.
