Brasidas (c. 472-422 BC)

Spartan general during the first decade of the Peloponnesian War (431-404 BC). In 428 BC he led a force of freed helots (Spartan serfs) and mercenaries into Thessaly and won over several Athenian colonies. He defeated the Athenian army at Amphipolis 422 BC, but he and the Athenian general Cleon were killed in the battle. Their deaths eased the path to the Peace of Nicias 421 BC.

To him we owe the Brasidas, the Dion, the Epaminondas, the Scipio of old, and I must think we are more deeply indebted to him than to all the ancient writers.
