Bratsk

City in Irkutsk oblast (region) of the Russian Federation, in southern Siberia; population (1996 est) 256,000. Bratsk is situated on the River Angara and the Baikal–Amur railway (an extension of the Trans-Siberian Railway), 470 km/292 mi northwest of Irkutsk. The city was built at the same time (1955) as construction began on the huge Bratsk hydroelectric dam; the power this generates is used locally in aluminium smelting, wood processing, and chemical plants.

On completion, Bratsk hydroelectric power station was the largest in the world. Power from here is transmitted over 1,000 km/621 mi west for use in the Kuznetsk Basin.
