Brauer, Richard (Dagobert)

Brauer, Richard (Dagobert) (1901-1977)

US mathematician of German origin. He was instrumental in the development of modern algebra. He was a member of the National Academy of Sciences.

He was born in Berlin, Germany, and emigrated to the USA for professional reasons in 1933. He chaired the Harvard Mathematics Department 1959-63, was president of the American Mathematical Society, and was awarded the National Medal of Science in 1971.
