Bregenz

Capital of the Austrian province of Vorarlberg, at the eastern end of Lake Constance; population (2001) 26,800. It is a tourist resort, trades in agricultural produce, and has textile, chemicals, and woodworking industries. The Romans called it Brigantium. Part of the 13th-century walls remain, and the church is partly 11th century. A music festival is held annually in the city.
