Breit, Gregory (1899-1981)

Ukrainian-born US physicist who emigrated to the USA in 1915. A major contributor to the fields of nuclear physics and quantum electrodynamics, he put forward the theory that the hydrogen bomb would not cause an uncontrolled chain reaction resulting in global destruction.

He was born at Nikolaev in the Ukraine. After settling in the USA he joined the Carnegie Institution, then taught at several US universities before moving to the State University of New York: Buffalo in 1968.
