Breitkopf, Johann Gottlob Immanuel (1719–1794)

German typographer. He introduced many valuable typographical improvements, obtaining clearer and more elegant letters than had hitherto been known. He also invented a new method of printing music and one for printing maps with movable types, and wrote several books on printing.

He was born in Leipzig, the son of Bernhardt Breitkopf, and educated at the university in Leipzig. He ran his father's printing and publishing business, Breitkopf and Härtel, from 1745.
