Manzini

Town and principal commercial centre of Swaziland, 40 km/25 mi southeast of Mbabane; population (2001 est) 22,500. Formerly the capital of Swaziland (until 1902), Manzini, which lies in the densely peopled Middle Veld region, remains a major commercial, industrial, and agricultural centre with an international airport nearby and the Malkerns irrigation scheme to the north. The surrounding area produces maize, cotton, and tobacco, as well as fruit, beef, and dairy goods, and Manzini's industries include meat and milk processing, flour milling, cotton ginning, and fruit canning.

Manzini has a Roman Catholic cathedral. The University of Swaziland is located nearby at Matsaya. The town was renamed Manzini in 1960, having been named originally after a local trader in 1887.
