Bremerton
| City and port in Kitsap County, west Washington, USA, 30 km/19 mi west of Seattle and 50 km/31 mi northwest of Tacoma, on an inlet of Puget Sound near the Olympic Mountains; population (2000) 37,300. The town serves as a port for the area's fish, dairy, and lumber products; the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard (1891) is also important to the economy, as is tourism. The city is home to the Bremerton Naval Museum and Olympic College (1946). |
| Bremerton was laid out in 1891 and incorporated in 1901. It was the northern home of the US Pacific Fleet. The Bangor submarine base is 19 km/12 mi to the northwest. The World War II battleship Missouri is docked in Bremerton. |
