Brenham

City and administrative headquarters of Washington County, southeastern Texas, 113 km/70 mi northwest of Houston; population (1990) 12,000. It has creameries (Brenham is noted for its icecream) and cotton mills, and is a trade and shipping centre for Brazos River valley produce. It also manufactures springs, mattresses, furniture, and brooms, and there are oilfields nearby.

It was settled in 1844 and became heavily German in the 1860s. The city was partly burned during disturbances in the Reconstruction era. Blinn College was founded here in 1883.
