Brennan, Walter

Brennan, Walter (1894-1974)

US actor. He was often seen in westerns, such as Red River (1948) and Rio Bravo (1959), playing the hero's sidekick. He was best known for the television comedy series The Real McCoys in the 1950s and 60s.

A versatile performer, he won the very first Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor, for his role in Come and Get It (1936). He went on to win the award two more times, for Kentucky (1938) and The Westerner (1940).

Other films include Banjo on My Knee (1936), Fury (1936), The Westerner (1940), Hangmen Also Die (1943), To Have and Have Not (1944), My Darling Clementine (1946), and Bad Day at Black Rock (1955).
