Brereton, Lewis M

Brereton, Lewis M (1890-1967)

US general. He served as a fighter pilot in World War I and during World War II commanded various US air forces in the Far East, the Middle East, and latterly in Europe.

He was appointed commander of the US Far East Air Force December in 1941, moving to India to become commander of the US Middle East Air Force in 1942. He took charge of the US 9th Air Force in Tunisia in October 1942. He then took the unit to the UK where it was trained as a tactical support force for the D-Day landings of June 1944. In August 1944 he became commander of the 1st Allied Airborne Army and planned and executed a number of airborne operations.
