Bressay

One of the Shetland Islands, Scotland, 3 km/2 mi east of Lerwick; population (2001) 380. Extending over an area 10 km/6 mi long and about 4 km/3 mi wide, it has a bold, rocky coastline and an interior largely covered by peat moss. A fishmeal factory, and television and VHF radio transmitting stations provide local employment.

The Isle of Noss, just off the east coast of Bressay, is a nature reserve with puffin and other seabird colonies.

Bressay Sound, separating Bressay from the island of Mainland, was first exploited as sheltered anchorage by Dutch fishermen in the 17th century, and ultimately led to the development of the town and port of Lerwick.
