Brett, John (1831-1902)

English landscape and marine painter. His early, minutely detailed pictures were inspired by Pre-Raphaelite principles. An example is The Stonebreaker (1857-58; Walker Gallery, Liverpool), which was highly praised by the critic John Ruskin. Later he specialized in Cornish coastal and geological scenes.

Brett was born in Liverpool. He became ARA in 1881.
