Breul, Karl Hermann (1860-1932)

German philologist and educationist. He settled in England in 1884, and had a strong influence on education in his adopted country. In 1897 he became the first editor of the Modern Language Quarterly.

His books on the teaching of modern languages include The Teaching of Modern Languages in our Secondary Schools (1898; republished as The Teaching of Modern Foreign Languages and Training of Teachers in 1906) and Handy Bibliographical Guide to the Study of the German Language and Literature (1895). He also produced well annotated editions of German classics and edited various German dictionaries.

Breul was appointed first university lecturer in German by Cambridge University. In 1910 he was elected to the recently founded Schröder professorship of German at Cambridge.
