Brevard

City and administrative headquarters of Transylvania County, western North Carolina, in the Blue Ridge Mountains, 43 km/27 mi southwest of Asheville; population (1990) 5,400. It is a resort centre surrounded by forests and waterfalls. There is a summer music festival and an increasingly popular retirement community. Brevard College (1853) is here.
