menhaden

Marine bony fish allied to shads and common on the Atlantic coast of North America. It is employed as bait, but is chiefly valuable for its rich oil. The residue remaining after extraction is used as a fertilizer.

Classification

The menhaden Brevoortia tyrannus is in order Clupeiformes, class Osteichthyes.
