Unit for measuring the reaction of optical materials to stress, defined in terms of the slowing down of light passing through the material when it is stretched or compressed.

Brewster

Community within Southeast township, southeastern New York, 56 km/35 mi northeast of New York City; population (1990) 1,600. It is a trade centre for a vegetable and dairy farming area, with some light industry. It also has corporate office buildings, and has become an affluent suburb.

Brewster has long been a summer resort and there are holiday homes and recreational facilities.
