Brewster, William

Brewster, William (1567–1644)

American colonist, one the Pilgrims. In 1620 he sailed in the Mayflower, and helped to found the Plymouth colony.

He was born in Scrooby, Nottinghamshire, where he became postmaster, responsible for relays of horses. In 1606 he helped to form a separatist Protestant church. He suffered persecution, but eventually obtained a land patent from the Virginia company.
