Briançon

French town on the River Durance, in the département of Hautes-Alpes; population (1990) 35,600. It has a trade in craie de Briançon (French chalk) and cheese. The highest town in Europe, it is a tourist resort – the older part of the town, strongly fortified by the 17th-century military engineer Vauban, is over 1,200 m/3,900 ft above sea level.
