contract bridge

Card game first played in 1925. From 1930 it quickly outgrew auction bridge in popularity. It is based on auction bridge, but used a different scoring system.

The game originated in 1925 on a steamer en route from Los Angeles to Havana, and was introduced by Harold Stirling Vanderbilt, one of the players.
