Bridge of Sighs

The Bridge of Sighs in Venice, Italy. It received its name in the 17th century, when it was supposed to have been the route for prisoners on their way to be executed.

Covered bridge in Venice connecting the Doge's Palace with the State prison. The name refers to the fact that it was by way of this bridge that offenders under sentence of death were conducted to their fate.

The heads were gone (knocked off by the French during their occupation of Venice,) but these were the throats, down which went the anonymous accusation, thrust in secretly at dead of night by an enemy, that doomed many an innocent man to walk the Bridge of Sighs and descend into the dungeon which none entered and hoped to see the sun again.
For a minute her hands wandered over the keys, as if uncertain what to play; then, falling into a sad, sweet strain, she sang "The Bridge of Sighs.
