Bridger, James

Bridger, James (1804–1881)

US fur trader and scout. He was the first white man to see the Great Salt Lake in 1824. He established Fort Bridger in Wyoming in 1843 and discovered Bridger's Pass in 1849. Between 1859 and 1866 he served as a guide on several major expeditions in the West.

He was born in Richmond, Virginia. He worked with fur companies in the northeast USA. After being driven out by Mormons in 1853, he guided a federal force in a campaign against them from 1857 to 1858.
