Bridgeton

Town and administrative headquarters of Cumberland County, southwest New Jersey; population (1990) 18,900. It is situated at the head of the Cohansey River, 26 km/16 mi south of Camden, in a rich truck farming region. The town is a distribution hub for agricultural products. Industries include food processing, glassmaking, clothing, fertilizer manufacture, and dairy products. Tourism is also important to the local economy.

Settled by Quakers in 1686, Bridgeton became a 19th-century manufacturing centre with a woollen mill, nail factory, and ironworks. Over 2,000 Colonial, Federal, and Victorian buildings are preserved, forming New Jersey's largest historic district.
