Bridlington

Seaside resort in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England; population (2001) 33,600. It is situated on Bridlington Bay, 10 km/6 mi southwest of Flamborough Head. The town is the headquarters of the Royal Yorkshire Yacht Club; its 900 year-old working harbour accommodates numerous small vessels. The area's main industry lies in the entertainment sector.

Bridlington initially developed as a fishing town and is the birthplace of the architect and landscape gardener William Kent.

The lodgings in Bridlington of Queen Henrietta Maria, wife of Charles I, were bombarded by the parliamentary ships of Admiral Batten in February 1643. Shots were also fired to shore from an American squadron under the command of John Paul Jones in 1779.

Features include the seafront road train, used to transport visitors, and a collection of period amusements. The Bridlington Spa complex includes the Spa Theatre, a recently refurbished Victorian theatre, and Spa Royal Hall, a 1930s ballroom.
