Brienz

Commune in the canton of Bern, Switzerland, 52 km/32 mi southeast of Bern; population (1995 est) 125. Brienz is the centre of the Bernese Alps woodcarving industry and also manufactures violins. It is situated northeast of Lake Brienz, at the foot of the Brienzergrat mountain range. The lake is 14 km/9 mi long and 5 km/3 mi wide, and lies in the valley of the River Aar.
