Briggs, Charles Augustus (1841–1913)

US clergyman, educator, and professor of Hebrew. Conservative Presbyterians objected to his scholarly Old Testament work, found him guilty of heresy, and suspended him from the ministry. He was ordained in the Episcopal Church and regained his professorship.

He was born in New York City, the son of a prosperous businessman. He served briefly with a New York infantry regiment on the outbreak of the Civil War, then entered Union Theological Seminary.
