Briggs, Winslow R (Russell) (1928– )

US plant physiologist. He made major contributions to studies of plant growth and the biochemistry and molecular biology of phytomorphogenesis (plant development) and photosynthesis.

He was born in St Paul, Minnesota. He taught and carried out research at Stanford 1955–67, moved to Harvard 1967–73, then joined the Carnegie Laboratory at Stanford.

A dedicated educator, he was quoted as saying, ‘With gifted students, remarkable things are possible.’
