Jim Thorpe

Borough and seat of Carbon County, eastern Pennsylvania; population (1990) 5,000. The borough is located on the Lehigh River, in the western Pocono Mountains, 37 km/23 mi northwest of Allentown.

Jim Thorpe was founded in 1815 as Mauch Chunk. When it was merged with East Mauch Chunk in 1954, it was renamed after a renowned American athlete (1888-1953), whose final resting place is here. Once a busy railway and manufacturing hub, it still has a variety of industries, but relies largely on coalmining and tourism.
