Brill Building

Centre of US commercial songwriting in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Housed on 1619 Broadway, New York, it was the headquarters of such songwriters as Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller with record producer Phil Spector.

Other Brill Building songwriters include Doc Pomus and Mort Shuman; Neil Sedaka (1939– ) and Howard Greenfield – ‘Stupid Cupid’ (1958), ‘Oh! Carol’ (1959); Ellie Greenwich (1940– ) and Jeff Barry (1939– ) – ‘Da Doo Ron Ron’ (1963), ‘Chapel of Love’ (1964); Neil Diamond (1941– ) – ‘I'm a Believer’ (1966); Gerry Goffin (1939– ) and Carole King (1942– ) – ‘Up on the Roof’ (1962), ‘The Loco-Motion’ (1962); Cynthia Weil (1942– ) and Barry Mann (1939– ) – ‘Uptown’ (1962), ‘We Gotta Get Out of This Place’ (1965); Burt Bacharach (1928– ) and Hal David (1921– ) – ‘Anyone Who Had a Heart’ (1964), ‘24 Hours from Tulsa’ (1964); and Bert Berns (1929–1967) – ‘Twist and Shout’ (1961).
