Bristol County| County in southeastern Massachusetts, on Buzzards Bay and the Rhode Island border; area 1,443 sq km/557 sq mi; population (1998 est) 515,500. Its capital is Taunton. In the mid-19th century the area became a centre of textile manufacturing, with many mills concentrated in Fall River and New Bedford. As the industry declined in the 20th century, the county's economy deteriorated; it experienced high unemployment in the 1990s. |
