Also found in: Encyclopedia 0.02 sec.

Bristow, Benjamin Helm (1832–1896)

US lawyer and public official. As a post-war US attorney for Kentucky, he helped suppress illicit distilling and Ku Klux Klan activity. As President Ulysses S Grant's treasury secretary in 1874, he smashed the notorious Whiskey Ring.

He was born in Elkton, Kentucky, the son of a lawyer. He worked for a time for his father, then commanded Kentucky Union troops during the Civil War. Forced from office in 1876 by distillers who turned President Grant against him, Bristow returned to private practice and became president of the American Bar Association in 1879.
