British Film InstituteOrganization founded in 1933 to promote the cinema as a ‘means of entertainment and instruction’. It includes the National Film Archive (founded in 1935) and the National Film Theatre (founded in 1951), and is involved in publishing books and periodicals such as the monthly Sight and Sound. The BFI provides funding for film distribution and exhibition in Britain, and also releases films on its video label Connoisseur Video. It is responsible for programming and running the annual London Film Festival. A library of film books and journals, a stills and posters department, and research facilities are housed at the BFI's headquarters in London.

The building contains the biggest British IMAX cinema, created for the nearby British Film Institute. On behalf of the British Film Institute, Herbert is refurbishing all of the common corridors as well as constructing new projection booths at the National Film Theatre on South Bank. The British Film Institute (BFI), established in 1933, says that it `promotes understanding and appreciation of Britain's rich film and television heritage and culture'. |
