Bressanone

Town in Trentino-Alto Adige region, northern Italy, situated at the confluence of the rivers Isarco and Rienza, on a road to the Brenner Pass at the northern foot of the Dolomites; population (1990 est) 16,800. Now a winter sports resort, it was the capital of an ecclesiastical principality of the Holy Roman Empire 1179–1803. The cathedral and bishop's palace date from the 13th century. Tourism is important.
