Broederlam, Melchior (c. 1355-c. 1411)

Netherlandish painter of the Franco-Flemish School. He became court painter and valet de chambre to the Duke of Burgundy, Philip the Bold, in 1385. His principal remaining works are the panels of an altarpiece commissioned by the duke for the Chartreuse (Carthusian monastery) of Champmol in 1392.

In the panels depicting The Annunciation and Visitation and The Presentation in the Temple and Flight into Egypt (1394-99, Musée des Beaux-Arts, Dijon), there is a blend of Flemish, French, and Sienese styles.
